2. Get the page's access_token by querying /me/accounts

calculating age groups in mysql

And so i was given the task to retrieve registered users data and break it down according to age group. i'm not very strong in mysql, so instead of calculating it in PHP, i challenged myself to complete it in one SELECT statement; and so this servers as a note-to-self for my future reference :)

the date-of-birth is of DATE data type, and the age groups required are:

18 and below | 19 - 25 | 26 and above

and here's the sql:

So, you've followed all the tutorials you can find in the world and after some extreme hair-pulling, things still don't work

The Problem
After authentication, you are thrown into an infinite loop:
iframe canvas app > fb login.php > yoursite redirect url > and repeat

The Solution
go to your App Setting > Facebook Integration > Page Tabs heading, and make sure your Tab URL has a trailing slash on it.

This may not solve your problem, but it's worth checking.

so, i'm into my 6th month here, here in this beautiful, functional country. weird to say, i still feel like i'm dreaming - all this, it's like a dream.

i'm happy and sad at the same time.

happy that i'm working in another country, it gives me a sense of achievement. happy that i actually can be independant.

sad that i left home, and friends who understand me are not within reach. sad that there's nothing that i can relate to here (personally) - sound of Dreamy barking, family chatters or the neighbour's (really) stinking cats. :D

So, inspired by the song (and the band), he decided to team up with Girlie and Ducky to play their own version of that song, entitled - "Ice Creams and Desserts All Night".

But Bobby is known for not being punctual, and of course, he is late again on the big day, and this is what happened...

cooked again yesterday. this time it's Herb/Butter Rice, Asparagus Pork Bacon and Roasted Chicken. Not much photos here... bz ma! Own style, try at own risk!

Herb/Butter Rice
1. Heat butter. When melted, add garlic, onions and fry til fragrant
2. Add some bay leaves and a cinnamon stick (crack it a bit to bring out flavor). fry til fragrant
3. add in uncooked white rice and chopped parsley, mix well.
4. finally add raisins, mix well and remove
5. cook the rice as you would normally, salt/pepper to taste.

Asparagus Pork Bacon
1. Cut asparagus in half.
2. cover asparagus with some olive oil
3. cut bacon in half if too long, roll 4 asparagus in it
4. add salt if you want, i prefer the original smell/taste.

Roasted Chicken
1. clean chicken, rub olive oil on skin, and then rub black pepper + herbs
2. add abit of black sauce + soy sauce on the skin for browning
3. Stuff whole Garlic, chopped yellow onions and bay leaves into cavity
4. Place potatoes, carrots and tomatoes on baking pan, and place chicken on the veges
5. Pour red wine on the pan and mix with veges
6. Heat oven to 210celc and bake/grill for 1hour. turn the chicken after 20 minutes. The breast-side might need longer time.
7. For the final 10-15minutes, put the asparagues into the even and grill. The juice will drip onto the chicken. yum
8. when done, remove chicken and veges. and abit of hot water onto the pan to make some sauce. Remove most of it into a bowl
9. tried something new. pour herb rice onto the remaining sauce on the pan and mix well. somehow it brings out more aroma. hmmm

Own style. Try at own risk!

1. Olive oil + chilli flakes + garlic - mix all.
2. Clean prawns, marinate with parsley, salt and black pepper
3. Chop button mushrooms, garlic and fresh tomatoes + tomato chunks (can)
4. Boil water, add salt, butter, parsley and Angel Hair
5. Drain water, add a bit of olive oil and mix Angel Hair well
6. Heat pan, add few spoons of mixture #1 and butter, and cook prawns in low heat. Remove and put aside
7. Heat pan, add few sppons of mixture #1. When hot, throw in item #3 and mix well
8. And a some white wine and leave to sizzle, and salt/pepper to taste.
9. Remove and pour on Angel Hair. Add the prawns and mix well. add more mixture #1 if too dry

Taste: light. slight spicy, and abit sour from the tomatoes. prawns should give some sweet taste

Mixture #1. Saute chill + garlic for aroma before mixing

1. devein the prawns and split along the back from head to the tail
2. butter, chopped garlic, fresh chopped parsley and a bit of salt - mix well
3. stuff (for a lack of better terms) #2 into the opening of the prawns
4. squeeze some lemon over the stuffed prawns
5. leave to marinate
6. bbq / grill / pan fry
7. serve with more fresh parsley
8. optionally a squeeze of lemon

damn it's good.

WHOA, MINI APPLYING FOR HERITAGE STATUS?

Yes. It's in port klang, near the last KTM station. I'm not sure how long this place has been operating, but it looks it's been around.

This place was introduced to me by my girlfriend. Her dad used to bring her here a lot when she was young. I'm glad that this place is still around, it just gives a different feeling compared to the normal eating places you go to.

Don't let the looks of the food fool you, cause i was. it looks darn simple, but when you actually eat it, man, don't be surprised if you order another one.

Location:
Drive towards Klang on Federal Highway. Just keep going straight and you'll end up on a bridge crossing the Klang River. About 1KM after the bridge, there's another ramp, go up the ramp, and keep to the right (the ramp splits into 2).

drive along the highway (you'll be passing La Salle school, a hospital and a hotel on the left, i think), after about 5 to 10 minutes drive(if no jam), the highway should now end up to a 2-lane road. You can see a huge overpass in front of you, perpendicular to the road you are on. Turn left at that traffic lights - you are now under the overpass. There will be shops on your left. Cathay is at the end of this lot.

SERVER ON A THUMBDRIVE OR CD

We have this project that runs html/flash and the flash communicates with javascript.

We copy the files to a thumbdrive, run the HTML file and a Flash Player Security Warning pops up. The problem is the HTML has to run on a server due to the Flash/Javascript communication (i think!).

Comes Server2Go.

it's quite lightweight, about 13mb (without PHP/MYSQL) and it works well. It does support PHP/MYSQL, but I've not tried it yet.

Good tool to keep.

Tilt-Shift

Tried my hands on tilt-shift technique on Photoshop, my reference is here:

It's quite fun, seeing how a simple lense blur can change the image. But i noticed not all images are suitable, i think it works best with photos that have interesting backgrounds, so that the perspective of lense blur are maximized. Just my opinion though.

SEAMLESS WHITE BACKGROUND

I've an assignment tomorrow to help a friend shoot food products for her F&B outlet. Good thing is she told me what shots she's looking for - subjects with clean white background. Bad news is I don't know how to do it! As usual, Google is my library, but then i only have an SB900 at hand and most of the guides require more than 1 light sources.

Thankfully, the food products are not big in sizes, so i think my trusty SB900 and my on-board flash should do the trick. To confirm my doubts, i did a test shot an hour ago, and it works.

almost 3/4 of the photo is clean white, except the bottom part of picture coz i dun have enough white paper as a base, and probably due to the positioning of strobe is a bit off, but it's not bad for a first try. So gotta photoshop abit to clean it up.

Web Service returns NULL value in ASP.NET

this is a follow up to my previous post.

As mentioned, i'm getting NULL values in the response object even though the total number of 'records' are correct.

Again, after much digging here and there, it seems that the problem lies in incorrect namespace defined in the Proxy class when VS 2003 builds the Reference file for the WSDL.

I found my clue from here:

Altho similar, the error was found in the response object defined in the Web Service, the namespace there is different from the method's!

* if i'm not mistaken, the WSDL is hosted in a Java/Axis server

reminder to self if this happens again:
1. check SOAP request/response XML
2. check namespace in response XML, ensure no empty namespace
3. check namespace in method, ensure namespace is same as response XML
4. check namespace in object var (if any), ensure namespace is same as response XML

* i'm no pro in .NET, just started few days ago, so drop a line if there are corrections!

Log SOAP request/response raw XML with Fiddler 2

hmm, the past week was a crunch. i don't know ASP.NET (VB), and gotta get a friend to help speed things up for me in 2 days. On the 3rd day, I received the WSDL definition and started coding away with something that is foreign to me, Visual Studio 2003. But hey, it's quite a good IDE I must say.

Anyhow, the method was called successfully, and the response received as well, but hey, when I examine the object, all the values are NULL!! i'm stumped for 2 reasons:

1. i'm not familiar with this
2. i dunno where to start

the only thing I can think of is to run it through a proxy, and i turn to Fiddler, my favourite, but i was having hard time hooking up IIS to pass thru the Fiddler. After 3 days of Googling, this is the solution:

Define the proxy settings in Web.config:

If i'm not mistaken, Fiddler listens to port 8888 by default.

i've always been passionate about photography, but never really put a lot of proper effort into it. Therefore, i've changed my blog layout to be more of a photoblog, so that i'm reminded to keep shooting and keep postin'.

to start off...

this is a photo i shot back in 2006, using Nikon F55 film camera - if i'm not mistaken, I think I used an expired roll. i was driving home from work about 6pm and saw the beautiful formation of the clouds. once i got home, i quickly grabbed my camera and drove to the best vantage point near my home. the hard part is because i'm using film, i don't know the outcome of the shot, so i took about 4-5 shots with different exposure settings. man, the anticipation is a real killer.

probably my best attempt after hundreds of tries wherever i went!

Today we received a long email from our worldwide CEO which serves as a year-end, closing email for us.

it was a very well written note, as this year proves alot of hardship for us as we lose some accounts, and won some.

Locally, we performed well. Very well. And i'm really glad i'm part of this show, and it proves that all the hardwork pays off.

So yes, this year was a tough year, and we do look forward to next year. And in his words:

Finally, the day has come after about a month of planning - a beach shoot with Emily. There were 4 photographers and Morib is our location of choice.

This is my first beach shoot, and it really proved to be difficult (for me la!). There are only so many elements u can use... the sea, the beach, trees & sky. And for the first time, i have NO IDEA on how to shoot! =)

Lucky me, Emily is quite a natural. She knows what to do, she knows how to pose, and most importantly, she's comfortable with us.

But the sun is really shining today (not to mention to heat), and i almost can't see the image previews on the camera... i relied on the Histogram... and can only hope that the photos are good.

The photos aren't bad... but definitely could be better. will definitely post it up when it's ready.

Bali, as I saw it

Amidst busy schedule, the time has come for me to take some time off.

We're fortunate to have got a tour guide that's friendly, speaks good english and witty. the way he explains about Bali and Balinese are not to be missed.

And I didn't know that ~95% of the locals are Hindus. That said, the cultural practice/belief are strong. They pray every morning and evening - the 3 Hindu gods, can't remember the names but they're the Creator, Defender and Destroyer - , they believe in Karma, and the way houses are built still retains the feature of Balinese/Hinduism since Bali existed.

We stayed in White Rose Hotel, which is about 500m from where the 2002 bombing occured. There is now a monument built, a tribute to the victims.

So, the tour wasn't bad, we've seen many temples! really, they're alot, but each with significant story behind them.

:: DAY 1 ::
First, a few stops at handicraft place, then we head to a Monkey place, where you get to buy nuts and bananas to feed them Monkeys. Real friendly creatures!

Next, we went for lunch in Ubud, a famous dish known as Dirty Duck or Bebek Bengil, as the locals call it.

- long beans with mild tumeric taste

- fresh onions and chillies in oil, good stuff this

- the sambal, also good stuff

- the duck. it looks very dry and rock solid, but it's actually soft inside! amazing.

Then we went to Kintamali mountain, about 1+ hour drive from Kuta, where we can see a magnificient view of a volcano. Weather is nice and cool. nothing much here, just a 10-15minutes stop.

:: DAY 2 ::
Went to visit a museum in Denpasar. Good insight this place, really get to learn the culture of Bali. very nice craftings and details on the structures too

in the museum, they have an old wood-machine that is used to do weaving. interested to see, we asked the tour guide if it is still in use, and it is! so off we go!

the rest of the day is pretty much the same. for this trip, we didn't get much free-and-easy time, but it's all good yo. i'm definitely planning for another one next year!

using non true-type fonts in flash

OT fonts installed doesn't show up in Flash - hence, breaks the design style as some of the font properties are not available, i.e. Light & Medium.

SO HOW?

have to convert to True Type - http://www.geocities.jp/meir000/fontforge/

1. launch .bat file
2. select .otf font
3. when loaded, go to Element > Font Info
4. click on General tab
5. Change Em Size to 1024, 2048 or 4096 (i dunno know y...)
6. click Ok
7. go to File > Generate Fonts
8. in the left dropdown below the filename, select TrueType
9. Save!

this file, apart from doing its simple autorun stuff, can create nuisance. for a few weeks now, i can't double-click to access my external hdd. i have to either type in the drive letter in the address bar, or open in from the FOLDER view pane.

so i turned on 'show hidden files' but nope, no autorun there. did a search around and found this:

try turning on 'show protected files' as well. NOte: be very careful with what you do after turning this on. with any luck, you will see the 'protected' autorun.inf. the contents (should) look like this:

delete away!

a few of our websites hosting are being upgraded during the recent days, and what the hell, the next morning we found out the login isn't working, the news feeds are not working.

The session keeps recreating on EVERY refresh of the page. sigh. that's my biggest nightmare. the main link into the website is broken.

Checked the cookie, and nope, no session cookie created by the browser. so i turned on the error reportings and true enough something is 'being output before the headers are sent'.

after some tracing i found the culprit. it's some empty lines after the closing ?> php tag at the end of the file. Lucky me that i've read about this empty lines somewhere before... but i still dunno why it's generating errors. but hey, its working now!

Appropriately named ReNamer, this might the best batch file renaming tool I've used - at least for me.

Very nice and clean interface to begin with. Something different about this little app is that it uses Rules to rename files. It's like telling the program all the steps required to rename your files.

I touched down in Phuket on Sunday(16/09/2007), around 3:15pm, Phuket time. By the time i came out of the airport to wait for the dude to pick us up, it's about 4pm. Not long after that, sirens were screaming and a police truck stopped in front of us, and there are people yelling in pain, with bloodied shirts. They are all wet, and i remember seeing a man being helped alighting from the truck, his left eye swollen. It was scary seeing all that, and we didn't know what happened. Ask a Thai beside me, he said might have been a bus accident.

Our van came, and we were on the way to Patong. Along the way, ambulance are passing us non-stop. it was well over 10 of them, each passing us in 5 to 10 minutes gap.

We only found out what happened at night when we were walking along the street, and saw the news.

Came the day we are returning home to Malaysia. Sitting in the plane while it taxis into position, the runway is just beside the crash site, and seeing that, gives a chill down my spine.

My condolences and sympathy to the victims family.

Flying is never the same again.

PHP Session, Iframe and redirect problem

This problem has mystified me for the past 2 weeks...

I have a 3-step registration form which saves data for each page into the session. Each step has a back/next button, and it will load the data from the session into the page for edit if the user chose to. Btw, it's a site with iFrame, and my forms are in it.

The Problem
My session is lost when i'm in step-2! When step-1 is completed, data is saved into the session and the page is redirected to Step-2 using header("Location.."). But Step-2 creates a new session id!

After much debugging, i figured out 2 things:
1. The second session is created when there is only 1 session associated to the browser
2. The form works find when I retry - meaning when there are 2 sessions associated to the browser... and it saves into the 1st session!

The Solution
Anyway, i think it's caused by having the iFrame within the site... but i don't know why!

There are many solutions on the net, about sessions not being persistent. but they either don't work, or it's not suitable on my current framework...

But what i realized is the redirection script. Originally i'm using :
header("Location: http://url/to/site/somefile.php")
which should be the way to redirect... but THAT actually causes the double sessions!

so i changed it to : header("Location: somefile.php") and it works fine!

*fingers crossed* hopefully it won't fail on me!

"Hacked by Pokemon" removal steps

As requested:

STEP 1
Open My Computer->Tools->Fold Options. The 'Folder Options' dialog box will appear
Click on the View tab.
In the list, select "Show hidden files and folders" and UNCHECK "Hide protected operating system files"
Click OK
STEP 2
Click on Start->Run and type "taskmgr.exe" and click OK. The Windows Task Manager should appear.
Click on the "Processes" tab and then click on the "Image Name" colum to sort it.
Scroll and look for "wscript.exe", select it and click "End Process".
If there are more than one wscript.exe, repeat step 2c
Close the Task Manager when you're done
STEP 3
* Before continuing, i realised that both the autorun.inf and bha.dll.vbs resides on the root folder of each hardisk.
ie: i have 5 partitions: C D E F G, and these 2 files appear in each partition ONCE... but to be safe, follow the steps below
Goto Start->Search->For files and folders. The Search Results window appears
Choose "All Files and Folders"
In the first textbox(All or part of...), type in autorun.inf
In the second textbox(A word or phrase...), type in bha.dll.vbs
Click on "More advanced options" at the bottom, and select: "Search hidden files and folders". Hit Search!
If you have a large drive, sit back and have a tea. =).

The following steps will start deleting the files using SHIFT + DELETE, which permanently remove files. Use with care.
When it's done, follow the results and delete of autorun.inf
In the same folders where the autorun.inf are, you should see bha.dll.vbs as well, delete that too! (If not, do another search)
Next, go to C:\Windows\, and look for MS32DLL.dll.vbs and delete it. (Search again if u can't find it)
STEP 4
* Again, be very careful when meddling with the registry. i'm not responsible!)
Go to Start->Run, type 'regedit' and hit OK, the Registry Editor appears.
Follow this HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> Software -->Microsoft -->Windows --> Current Version --> Run
Look for MS32DLL and delete
Then, follow KEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Microsoft --> Internet Explorer --> Main
Look for Window Title key that reads "Hacked by Pokemon". Delete that
Close the Registry Editor
STEP 5.
(This step will disable all the Autoplay feature. All medias will no longer Autoplay. Safer, but you can skip if u want to.)
Go to Start->Run and type 'gpedit.msc', and hit OK. This will open "Group Policy"
Goto User Configuration->Administrative Templates->System and double-click "Turn off Autoplay"
In the dialog box, select Enabled, and in the drop-down, select All Drives. Hit OK and close the Group Policy
STEP 6
(I didn't find what i was supposed to be there, but here it is)
Goto Start->Run and type msconfig, and hit OK
Click on Startup tab
Look for MS32DLL, Uncheck it.
Click Apply and close. Select 'Exit without Restart'
STEP 7
You're done. now repeat step 1, but this time:
Select "Do not show hidden files and folders" and:
CHECK "Hide protected operating system files"
Click OK to close.
Empty Recycle Bin and Restart
STEP 8.
You're done! yay.

If you've seen the words above in your Internet Explorer title bar, chances are your machine has been compromised. How? i have no idea. Not only that, you'll also notice that when your open your My Computer and right click on any of your HARD DISK, Autoplay will appear as the first item instead of Explore. This means every time you need to access them folders, you need to right-click and 'explore' or 'open' Searching the web for 'hacked by pokemon' yields nothing promising, except for cartoons =).

BUT...
i found out that this pokemon thingy was once known as 'hacked by godzilla'. so, i found this link:

i can't use it to remove pokemon. damn.

ANYWAYS...
long story short. i managed to find out how to remove it. 'pokemon' is using a different filename. bha.dll.vbs. I'm lazy to retype all the steps... just replace all MS32DLL.dll.vbs with bha.dll.vbs. Except for Step 6, the registry key is still "MS32DLL"

Also note that if you've connected your thumbdrive, mp3 player, ipod to your pc while it is infected, those files might be in there too... so go in there and kill 'em all!

Note: bha.dll.vbs is the infected filename in my PC, filename MAY differ in other PCs. I am not responsible for any harm caused to your PC by using the steps above. Use with care. ALWAYS BACKUP!

get this. i'm now quarter of a century old. (yay). looking back, i'm now working into my 5th year and i'm questioning myself where am i now, or rather, where have i been? nowhere. apart from getting myself into an established ad agency (yay) and still being the only one doing what i do (yay) and oh, STILL doing my masters(yay), i don't think i have anything else to yay about anymore.

to me, i think it's fair. but it makes me wonder where should one start? or stop? what to do and what not to do, how much to give and how much to hold back... u know, the works.

what is needed to create a balance between equality and gentlemanly? IF that is actually what's missing in a relationship, courtship, friendship or whatever-ship...

i think it boils down to different expectations at different situations OR same expections at different situations OR different expectations at the same situation AND having to know those expectations at different/same situations.

Pretty obvious that needs change. Of course, no one is a mind reader although the ladies are naturally better at that =) while the guys tend to need some 'direct hint' to actually understand what the ladies are saying indirectly. *wInK*

The jazz duo, Double Take was in town last week, and i managed to get myself (yes, just myself! how sad...) an invite to their mini performance at 101 Degrees East at Bintang Walk. The whole restaurant setup is kinda classy... and i felt that i dun belong :P. but anyways, Mia's voice is so soothing, she made singing looks so easy... and effortless! And Roger was there playing aways his solos on his guitar and not missing a note or beat... amazing amazing amazing...

about 11ish, i joined kenny and his fiance at Halo Cafe, Pyramid. i've heard a lot about Jerry's singing and that night confirmed it all. this dude is actually damn good! his guitarist partner is equally good as well. They supposed to end the performance at 1am, but they kept going until about 2am. Catch them every Saturday there..

about 11ish, we adjourned to Halo Cafe at Sunway Pyramid. The singing wasn't that bad after all! but i heard Saturday's session are a lot better
night ended at about 2am

woke up at 9am, and went to have my fav nasi lemak
went for lunch at 1230, and head to Redbox at Pyramid right after. Session starts from to 2 to 5.
after that went to the the hospital to visit my cousin
8ish pm, went dinner at SS15, Subang. had my fav 'wat tan ho' and grilled sotong *sLuRp*/
10+, went home to change, and head to Matrix at Phileo Damansara to play pool
1+ am, drove to Jalan Alor to have 'wan tan mee'... the uncle only starts after 10pm every nite.

this would be my best shot so far. left work early last thursday and the sun was still pretty high up altho it's almost 7pm already. so i went home, picked up my camera, and head to the bridge leading up to the Secretariate Office. i was there, taking about 8 shots in total... and this was my last shot... phew.

went for a round of photography past weekend, this time using slides film - Fuji Velvia 100, then sent it for C41 x-processing. Photos came out good, with very high colour density. I especially love the photos taken with flash, somehow the background are extremely darkened.

the event was fun with games like Gorilla Walk and Tug of War and Love is Blind and others. We were worried that it's gonna rain, but it didn't until very late in the afternoon. phew =)

at nite, we went to Bangsar for TigerFC's world cup event - England vs Paraguay. The venue was packed! All of us got our faces painted... hehe.. it was a great nite.

My sunday wasn't bad either! but too lazy to type now...

most of my weekends are spent working... but last weekend i was like - "fark it, i'm getting my weekend back", and it turns out great. i was a kid for a while.

Nikon F55

Finally, my very own SLR camera, although film-based it's a good start for me. I took some sample shots during the weekends, and the photos turned out good and sharp. very nice colors as well - not sure if it is the film brand or the lens, will find that out!

Every few months, our company will have a mini party and each time it will be organized by different division. on 26th May, we had another and is jointly organized my our division and another. Usually, the mini party is held in the Chill Room(where we take a break to play pool/foosball) in our office, but we decided to do something different.

We held ours at sevenatenine which is located in Ascott, KLCC and our group occupied the area outside. started at 530pm, was raining, so it's cooling. had loads of free drinks/food - raw salmon, salmon pizza, squid, cod fish(YUMMY), etc.

Ambience was nice and the music, foods and drinks are good too. 2 hours on, i was little tipsy and numb. Then I was taking photos with my colleagues when a lady walked towards me and:

her: excuse me, i've just been dared to take a photo with you and your friends. Do you mind?
me: ... of coz not!

*snap* we took a photo.

More drinks came and i was dared to cheers with that group of ladies. being a bit tipsy, i wasn't really shy. hehe. so i walked there and cheers to them! so proud of myself accomplishing my first dare. *applause!*

not long after that i went to the gents and was aiming my shots when i hear someone talking - female at that. it's a bit too close for comfort. when i'm done, i walked to the washbasin, and there she was again! talking to a guy in the gents!

me: err, why are u here?
her: this is another dare!
me: wah...

the gents and ladies share the same big basin, separated by a mirror. if you duck low enough, you can see the other side through a gap between the basin and the mirror. how did i know?! coz after that conversation, i saw a camera jutting out of the basin from the other side! well, her fren is there with a camera. so i hold up a 'peace' sign and took a photo... hehe. and when she noticed her fren is taking picture, she asked for another, and we ducked low enough so that her fren can take a better shot!

that's how i found out. =)

ANYWAY, this is a very nice restaurant to dine. the food is great! dun think that it's too pricey as well. would make a nice place to bring your date there too!
